Pace control

Pace control is vital for lowering your score and eliminating those dreaded three or four putts on a hole.
Ensure your backswing and follow through are relatively equal in length and rely on the length of stroke to alter the distance and pace rather than eccessive deceleration or acceleration on your downswing. Aim to create a positive, smooth acceleration to create the same strike and sound each time.
A common error is often a build-up of tension during the stroke, thus creating more of a hit than a smooth stroke through impact. This creates an inconsistent strike and in turn inconsistency in distance and pace control. A simple breathing exercise and drill can help eradicate unwanted tension, encouraging a smooth and positive acceleration towards the hole and a better roll on the ball.
Start relatively close, approximately 2ft from the hole with three balls.
During each putt, simply breathe in on the back stroke and out through the downswing and follow through. Upon successfully holing from 2ft, start to move a little further away. This drill will allow you to become aware of any built-up tension and help create a more relaxed and consistent putting stroke.

Matching the weight and design of your putter with the speed and pace of the greens you play regularly are also key considerations for achieving distance control. For example, if you generally play on fast greens you may prefer a putter with a softer insert.
Assess the pace of the practice green before heading to the course as this should replicate the pace of the greens on the golf course. Remember, the pace of the greens may change throughout a round according to weather conditions.
