Distance Control PDF Print E-mail

Pitch to perfection

Rely on alterations within the set-up and length of swing to control your distance, do not rely on the speed of your downswing.

Width of stance – As the swing shortens in length, narrow the width of your stance accordingly. This makes it easier to place the majority of your weight on your front foot and allows a more descending blow into the back of the ball [pic 1a - 1b].
Grip down the handle as the length of shot decreases. This automatically reduces the length and leverage of the swing to reduce the power [pic 2].
Back swing and follow through must remain relatively equidistant with a smooth acceleration throughout. Do not decelerate on the downswing in a last attempt to reduce the distance on the shot. Remember, the alterations in the set-up have catered for the reduction in power and a shorter swing with a smooth acceleration will control the distance. Make a positive through swing with a combination of hands, arms and body
[pic 3].
Visualising a clock face creates a reference point in your mind. Ensure you visualise two hands on exact opposite sides of the face encouraging equidistant backswing and follow through. For example, ten to two
[pic 4a - 4b].
