It is ever more apparent in the modern golfing era of the importance of physical conditioning. Not only for peak performance but injury prevention and longevity within the game. Gary Player realised its importance many years ago and one of the Worlds recent golfing greats, Tiger Woods, has made physical conditioning a top priority within his overall training programme and since Tiger hitting the scene in 1996 the approach to player development has dramatically changed. The Titleist Performance Institute, following years of extensive research with world leading experts in the realms of golf fitness, biomechanics, nutrition and equipment technology, have devised strategic screening processes and fitness programmes for golfers of all ages and abilities, allowing the opportunity to reach optimal performance and more importantly assist in injury prevention. The TPI currently work with many leading tour players including the likes of Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Robert Karlsson.
Technical swing issues may be addressed and developed between the Golf Professional and pupil however if physical limitations impede this development these areas must be addressed in order for further development. Imagine the frustration a golfer may feel when trying to attain a certain position in the golf swing, the brain knows what it has to do but the body wont listen! Assuming the understanding and motor skills are not an issue, it may be concluded that there is a physical limitation impeding progress. As a TPI qualified Level 2 Golf Fitness Instructor I will carry out a simple physical screening process that will help to ascertain if there are any limitations physically. Throughout the screening process we will be checking for either a mobility and/or stability issue and assess its impact on the golf swing. To give you a greater understaning of the key areas assessed in the screening process, mobility is the combination of normal joint range of motion and proper muscular flexibilty. This is a must for correct mechanics and to prevent injury. Mobility allows your body to move in all six degrees of motion, therefore giving you the ability to perform any motion without having to sacrifice stability. Now lets look at stability, this is created by combining balance, strength and muscular endurance. If you want to keep the bow of a bow and arrow stable as you pull the string back, you must have good balance, strength and muscular endurance. This is the same principle involved in creating a powerful golf swing. The ability to keep one part of your body secure while stretching and contracting adjacent segments allows us to generate speed and maintain a consistent posture throughout the golf swing. Having an awareness of the body’s strengths and weaknesses and creating development strategies to harness these allow for not only peak performance within your game but also provide a pathway to a general sense of well being in your every day life.
